SRI KRISHNA LEELAMRUTHAM (THE NECTARINE STORIES OF THE DEEDS OF LORD KRISHNA)

12. DELIVERANCE OF THE DEMON VATSASURA

Lord Krishna and Lord Balaram were a little grown up. They used to take care of calves in Vrindavan even though they have born in a rich family. So, Their responsibility was to take good care of the cowherd which is worshiped as God. Krishna and Balaram would throw stones on the trees to get delicious fruits. They also used to cover Themselves with a blanket and would play with calves. They also imitated sounds made by birds and animals especially the sound of cows. At times They would appreciate bull fighting.  In this way, Lord Krishna and Lord Balaram enjoyed their childhood past times.
One day, Lord Krishna, Lord Balaram and other boys were tending the calves on the banks of river Yamuna. The cowherd boys and the two Supreme Lords took shelter under the beautiful trees of Vrindavan. At a moment, Lord Krishna felt a peculiar calf among the herd. He recognized that the calf was none other than "Vatsasura" whose desire was to kill Them both. He appeared in a form of calf and entered in amidst of herd. Lord Krishna understood that the calf is the demon. Lord Krishna told, "My dear Brother! Did You find out who is in the midst of the cowherd? His motive is to kill Us". For that Lord Balaram uttered, "O Krishna! I very well knew that Vatsasura is also sent by kamsa to kill Us. But I don't know that why he has assumed like calf and mingled among the herd?". Both Krishna and Balaram were in dilemma that why this Vatsasura got mixed among the herd.. Lord Krishna secretly indicated a sign to Lord Balaram to skillfully trap the evil demon.

Lord Krishna and Lord Balaram approached very slowly to the demon as if They knew nothing about the form of Vatsasura. When Lord Krishna trapped the demon, He tightly caught the hind legs and tail of the demon and whirled him round and round. When the calf demon as about to lose his energies and vital breath, Lord Krishna threw him on the tree tops with a great force. Vatsasura died instantly.

On seeing this wonderful incident, the other cowherd boys praised Lord Krishna and Lord Balaram for Their strength and prowess and began to praise Them endlessly. After which, the two Supreme Lords received a shower of flowers from the Devas and Gods. Lord Krishna is the Supreme Lord and He is the supreme of all supremacies. He is the maker of this whole Universe! He directly taught Bhagavad-Gita to His great devotee, Arjuna. In His Gita, He stated that He knew the past, present and future of all the creatures in this whole universe. Hence, He also knew about Vatsasura whose motive was to kill the Supreme Lord, Krishna. But, due to His unlimited mercy of the living entities who are the product of the Lord Himself, He liberated the calf demon. So, One should remember the Supreme Lord in all situations to have long lasting relationship with Him.
