KRISHNA LEELAMRUTHAM (THE NECTARINE STORIES OF THE DEEDS OF LORD KRISHNA)

4. LORD KRISHNA AND THE DEMONESS PUTANA

Vasudeva told Nanda Maharaja that due to the evilness of Kamsa, Gokula might have some riot. Nanda Maharaja while returning from Mathura recalled Vasudeva's forewarning that there might be some riot. He thought that there was some reason behind the forewarning. So, out of fear, He prayed to Lord Narayana in order to protect Gokula from disturbances. Kamsa on the other hand called upon an aggressive demoness named Putana, the sister of Kamsa whose job was to kill small children in villages. Kamsa ordered the evil demoness Putana to go Gokula and to kill children in towns, villages and pasture lands. While Nanda maharaja had little fear on Kamsa's action to kill his child. The demonsess, whose mouth had full of plow like tooth, her nostrils was so deep like mountain caves, her scattered hair was copper colored, her socket of eyes colored blood red. She had the power to travel in outer space without any machines and had the mystic power to transform into any form she desired. Before entering into the village, she transformed into a beautiful woman. Everybody in the village was astonished with her external beauty. But internally, she was a demoness which was not known to the villagers. She had a gorgeous appearance. Of a sudden, the Gopis came out of their house and see the beautiful lady. They enquired among themselves, "O friends! See this gorgeous lady! Who is she? We haven't see her in Gokula?". Like that They conversed with each other. Putana's motto was to kill the small children which was not known to the inhabitants of Gokula. As per Kamsa's order, she killed small children in every place. Without asking permission, she entered Nanda Maharaja's house. The mother Yashoda and Rohini didn't know that the demoness arrived their home. Putana saw the divine child sleeping in the cradle. Lord Krishna understood that the beautiful woman was the demoness Putana herself. The Lord's unlimited power covered as latent like fire and submerged in ash. The demoness Putana didn't know that the Lord is the small child. And so she couldn't undertsand His power. The evil Putana took the baby on her lap. The beauty of the Lord is just indescribable! On seeing the magnificent Lord, automatically her breasts were filled with milk even though she was a demoness! He is the Lord of mercy and the well wisher of each and every soul. She took the Lord, placed on her lap and feed Him milk with her breasts containing poison. Lord Krishna was angry because she killed a lot of children in the village. The Lord cried out of anger and drank Her milk containing poison. Due to His hunger, squeezed the breast of the demoness with His hands and suckled out the poison and her vital breath. The demonsess couldn't bear the pain and screamed forcefully to leave her.

As He was hunger, He suckled out all her breath and Putana couldn't tolerate the pain because, it is an unnatural death. When soul leaves form the body, it gives much pain, It is an excruciating painful process! The soul usually seeks a hole to leave the body. The Supreme Personality of Godhead suckled out her whole breath at a second and that gave her an excruciating pain! Putana resumed her own form and the Earth, the mountains, and the whole Universe trembled because of her screaming. Finally she fall dead like a great mountain. On hearing the sound, the Gopis, Gopas, Yashoda and Rohini were rushing to come to the spot. They were all crying and shouting, "Where is our child? What happened to Him?". When Nanda Maharaj retuned back to Gokula He saw great trees fell on the ground. He recalled Vasudeva's foretell. Everyone saw the divine child playing fearlessly with the demoness Putana. The people of Gokula were so satisfied of killing the evil demoness by the divine child. They wondered, "What a miracle! All due to Lord's grace! Our child is not killed by the demoness!". Yashoda took up her child and washed Him thoroughly with cow urine. The people of Gokula conversed equally, "How gigantic the demoness's body is! Where can we dispose Her body?". Nanda Maharaj said, "We shall cut each part of the demoness's body with an axe and then dispose it". As per the order of Nanda Maharaj, the people of Gokula cut the demoness's each part of body with an axe. When Putana's gigantic body was burned, her sins were set freed and it smelled fragrant like sandal wood. Because of the touch of Lord, her body was purified from evil. Therefore the Lord has made pride of the name of Putana and even Her body! Putana attained the Lord's home by feeding Him as a mother. So, she became the foster mother of Lord Krishna even though she tried to kill the divine child. Lord Krishna showers mercy even for His enemies. So, He will certainly not abandon His loved ones.
